Beyond NDIS Directories: Tapping Local Community Referrals

Winter and Will unpack why the biggest growth opportunities for NDIS providers may be outside the usual bubble, from GPs and pharmacies to gyms, real estate agents, and libraries. They share practical, value-first outreach ideas that build trust, open new referral pathways, and help providers connect with the wider community.

Chapter 1

Looking Beyond the Bubble: Why Non-NDIS Partners are the Untapped Market

Winter, EnableUs Community

Welcome to the show everyone! I'm Winter, EnableUs Community, here with Will. And Will, I was looking at the provider register for 2026, and a single number absolutely jumped out at me. Over twenty-one thousand. There are over twenty-one thousand NDIS providers in Australia right now.

Will, EnableUs Community

Twenty-one thousand? That is an incredibly crowded room. If you're a provider trying to stand out by just doing the usual things -- like emailing the same support coordinators, showing up to the same expos, or bidding on the exact same digital search ads -- you're basically shouting into a hurricane.

Winter, EnableUs Community

Exactly. You are competing for the exact same slice of attention as thousands of others. But here's the thing: participants aren't just NDIS plan numbers. They don't live their lives inside the NDIS bubble. They go to local pharmacies, they visit their GP, they drop into the local gym, and they get coffee at the corner cafe.

Will, EnableUs Community

Yes! They're members of their local community first. And yet, so many providers treat non-NDIS businesses like they're completely irrelevant to their growth strategy. But if you think about it, a local GP clinic or a community pharmacist is actually a massive trusted authority.

Winter, EnableUs Community

GPs are the absolute frontline. I read a case study recently about a regional provider who decided to stop focusing purely on disability directories and instead built a direct relationship with their local hospital and GP clinics. Their referral rate shot up by fifty percent. Five-zero percent.

Will, EnableUs Community

That fifty percent bump is huge, but it makes total sense when you think about the trust factor. If my doctor or my long-time pharmacist recommends a specific provider to me because they know my family's situation, I'm going to trust that recommendation a hundred times more than a random Google search result.

Winter, EnableUs Community

And the beauty of it is that most of these local businesses actually want to help their customers, but they have absolutely no idea how to help them navigate the NDIS. It's incredibly complicated. So when you show up, you aren't just selling your services -- you're helping them solve a real problem for their existing clients.

Will, EnableUs Community

You're positioning yourself as a community stakeholder, not just a service provider trying to hit a target. You're saying, "Hey, we are both here serving the same community. Let's make it easier for people to get the support they need."

Chapter 2

Ground-Level Execution: From Overlooked Gateways to Value-First Outreach

Winter, EnableUs Community

So let's get highly tactical about this. How do we actually do this in the real world without sounding like a pushy salesperson? Because nobody wants a provider walking into a busy pharmacy throwing business cards around.

Will, EnableUs Community

Oh, absolutely not. That's the quickest way to get your brochures thrown straight into the recycling bin. Let's start with pharmacies because they are one of the most overlooked gateways. People with disability and their carers are in there constantly, and they trust their local pharmacist.

Winter, EnableUs Community

Right. So instead of a massive pitch, you walk in with a single, clear one-page service summary. Not a twenty-page booklet. Just one page that says: "This is exactly who we support, this is the area we cover, and here is how you can reach us in ten seconds." You make it a tool for the pharmacist to help their customer.

Will, EnableUs Community

Exactly. And think about gyms or local fitness centres. More and more participants are using their community participation funding to access mainstream wellness spaces. If you've got support workers bringing participants to a local gym, that gym's staff are going to notice.

Winter, EnableUs Community

They absolutely notice. And if you build a relationship with that gym manager, they might have other members who are struggling to find a support worker to help them train. It becomes this natural, organic connection. What about Specialist Disability Accommodation or SIL? Where do we look for that?

Will, EnableUs Community

Real estate agencies. Think about it -- property managers and local real estate agents encounter people looking for accessible housing all the time, but they usually know next to nothing about SDA or SIL funding. If you can educate them on how it works, you suddenly become their go-to expert when a client needs specialized housing.

Winter, EnableUs Community

That is such a brilliant angle because it's a completely untapped pool. Another great one is the local library. Public libraries are trusted, neutral community hubs. You could partner with them to run a free, thirty-minute information session on "How to Navigate your First NDIS Plan Review."

Will, EnableUs Community

I love that because it's pure value-first. You aren't pitching your brand; you are offering genuine, practical education. The families who show up to that library session are the ones who are overwhelmed and don't know who to trust. By being the person who simplifies things for them, you build instant trust.

Winter, EnableUs Community

It all comes back to that value-first approach. If you lead with how you can make their life easier, or how you can add value to their clients, you don't need a hard sell. The referrals will flow naturally because you've proven you actually care about the community.

Will, EnableUs Community

And if you're building your NDIS provider business right now and want to make sure your community outreach, marketing, and registration are all built on the right foundations from day one, the team at EnableUs is here to guide you every step of the way. That's all for this quick take, we'll see you next time.
